Traveling is my lifeblood.
Nothing brings me greater joy than being on the road and exploring all this world has to offer. There’s so much to see and experience out there.
And life is short.
So it kills my soul when circumstances force me to sit idle at our home base1, living an ordinary life I hoped never to return to when we headed out on our great adventure four years ago. This lifestyle is not what I wanted again!
It’s not all that bad though.
We have a warm bed and roof over our heads, get to spend time with our kids, can pay our bills and make ends meet, and overall are very healthy for our mid 50s. There are so many people who have it worse and I’m truly grateful for what I have.
It’s just that my heart longs to be on the open road and in the great outdoors.
There are places like Estes Park and Sedona that bring me such inner peace and I can find happiness even when everything else around me feels like a total shit show. Facing the daily challenges is way better in a place that enlivens your spirit.
Two weeks ago when all the snow was hitting the Colorado Rockies, all I could think about was being there, despite really hating the cold. Yet I’d rather deal with the cold than be sitting in warmer temperatures in the middle of Oklahoma City.
Oh how things have changed.
I even used to dream about owning a cool art studio filled with the awesome stuff I’d collected over the years and having a creative space to call home. Now all I dream about is selling what’s left of that collection while never settling in a place long enough to get too comfortable to call it home.
Apparently I love the nomadic lifestyle that much!
Maybe this will all change in 10 years when my body is broken even more and my rebellious spirit is completely crushed, but I’d like to get thousands of more miles and adventures added to my travel resume before it’s time to quit.
For now I’ll just have to sit and wait.
The positive side is I can finally catch up on dozens of travel posts sitting in the drafts folder, as well as launch a bunch of new products on our Road Life store — all those important things that constantly take a back seat to the excitement in front of me.
Well, that’s my story of woe today. Time for me to get work. ✌️
Last year we decided to rent a room in our daughter’s three bedroom duplex, giving us a better and cheaper alternative to hotels when coming back to Oklahoma for visits. Overall it’s been a great experience and we’re thankful she puts up with us!
