Hey James! Yes very excited for the year ahead! Stoked to explore the American West more. As far as how you can help? Well spreading the word about the magazine once it is released would be the biggest thing. Thanks again!
Think about amount Mountain Gazette and Summit Journal, all they do is create a magazine. But they do it with the utmost excellence. You have to be focused. That has been a big struggle with my creative pursuits, but I think I am starting to get the hang of it now.
I've not heard of those mags. Thanks for the recommendations.
Like you, I want to master the art of storytelling with digital and print, while having a clear focus on our audience, which I think will be full-time travelers or nomads between 40-70, but I could be wrong. I'm not trying to force us into a "target audience" yet.
But I agree being all over the place and chasing every shiny object is detrimental. Even thought I've learned this over 33 years in business as a creative, I still get distracted. However I do think when we know we are doing what we're supposed to be doing, it makes it easier to say no to other opportunities and focus like a laser.
I 100% agree. I really admire the brands and people that do one thing really well and then build on top of that. Really excited to see your magazine come to life. I would target a younger audience as well, they are really into the #Vanlife or road life scene.
Thanks! I don't want to exclude anyone really. As long as we all have a passion for adventure and travel, that's what matters. I love bringing people together regardless of age because there's so much we can learn from each other. I just figured since I'm mid 50s, I might not be "relevant" to those who are younger. LOL!
Yeah I get that. I think the age of person who is the editor of the magazine, doesn’t define the target audience. I think it is the contributors you choose to put in the magazine.
My advice from experience is that everything is a lot harder and takes a lot longer than you would expect. I would focus on one thing and do it 110% then do the next thing.
Thanks my friend! I agree with you and have experienced this all my life ... things taking longer to happen than expected. Sometimes you get lucky but more often you don't.
Yup. I have found that to be true. When I started this magazine I didn’t know that I would have to be managing state taxes, creating contracts, and becoming a graphic designer. That was all par for the course. I love doing it, just took way longer than anticipated. Let me know if there is anything I can help with “The Road Life Magazine”?
It can be hell managing all the roles as a solopreneur or even multiple roles as a team, but it gives you an appreciation for each function of the business. Then if you're able to build the business and hire others, it definitely helps with choosing the right person and knowing what's involved.
Honestly I'd love to connect with people who get it and the opportunity to bounce ideas off each other and encourage each other as we face the daily challenges of business and life.
Yeah I totally get that. It gives you so much respect for others who start their own business. I would love to bounce ideas off of people too. We should talk soon.
James- certainly! It would be great to connect. I’m really liking the positivity in your writing; it’s forward-thinking and open-minded. This week’s week for me, schedule-wise: I’m having two minor surgeries to correct past adventure injuries - one in my foot for running and another for a crushed finger. But hopefully, we can connect later this month when I'‘m 100%.
Goals for 2025:
- Release Two issues of my Magazine
- Hike 100 Miles
- Ski 30+ days
- Release 2 New Short Films
- Be more spontaneous
- Explore the American West (I am looking at you Montana, Utah, Idaho, and Colorado)
LOVE IT! It's great to get those out there and to focus on them. How can I help?
The American West is awesome. So many places to explore and hike. It's my favorite region in the U.S.
